Popularity in 2013 means more than just being popular in the confines of your school, place of work, or when hanging out. You also have to maintain the same popular behavior online. That means Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and any other place you interact with others.
Sadly, a lot of people, especially teens, act differently online. I’ve watched normally cool and friendly teenagers turn into nasty bullies once they hit the internet. And, this isn’t just a teen thing. Even adults behave differently online. I think it’s because the internet is faceless.
In other words, when you’re online you don’t have to actually interact with a person face to face. Except for sociopaths, it’s hard to bully or bash someone when you’re right looking at them. However, when the other people are “out there” it’s much easier to dismiss them and justify acting like a bully.
Still, what you do online can have real world consequences. Schools are cracking down on online bullying done outside of classroom hours. In addition, many colleges and universities are checking the social media presence of their applicants. I know a former student who almost lost a scholarship over his online behavior.
But, it’s not just possible consequences from adults that can happen due to poor online behavior. People your own age will decide whether they want to be your friend or date you based at least partially on your social media behavior. If you appear like a bully or as whiny or needy or negative online, it will affect how others view you in real life. You want to be popular everywhere, including on the internet.
So, from now on, make sure your online image is one of confidence and popularity. Here are a few simple tips:
- Don’t look stupid in photos (unless you’re trying to be funny). No duck face and don’t flip off the camera. I mean do you really think no one else has ever done that?
- Don’t stalk or bully other people. It’s just as annoying and creepy as in real life.
- Don’t whine. Your friends may not tell you, but they hate your whiny status updates.
- Avoid putting yourself down or airing your problems, especially romantic ones. A guy who talks about being single all the time will stay that way because he looks needy and whiny.
