We talked last week about why teens should care about politics. Most Americans aren’t really informed about the issues or are cynical about the political process. That certainly includes most teens. It’s especially hard for teens to care about the issues because they can’t vote until they turn eighteen and the vast majority of politicians are three times their age.
However, one guy decided he had enough of the fighting in Washington DC. So, he went out and started his own political group! And, he was barely even a teen. He was only thirteen.
Connor Brantley felt that nothing was getting done to solve the problems in the United States because the country’s leaders are too partisan. This means they focus more on promoting their own political party (Democrat and Republican) and staying in power rather than working for the good of the country.
Connor decided that rather than focus on promoting his positions, he would instead try to keep voters informed about the issues. He did this by forming United Now, his political organization. He also believes that teens should care more about politics because it does affect them.
Through his political work with United Now, Connor has found a degree of popularity, appearing on national television and even doing some speaking. But, as with the girls we spotlighted last week, it’s not about the fame, but about making a difference.
For this article, Connor offered the following quote about the future of politics following the 2012 Presidential election:
In a political system that is completely consumed by lobbyists and special interests, the importance of young people is too often overlooked. This trend will continue unless teens all across this country stand up and make their voice heard. Whether you supported President Obama, Governor Romney, or somebody else, at the end of the day we all can come together to ensure that Washington can’t ignore us any longer.
Below are a few of the traits that have allowed Connor to make a difference in the world of politics.
Most people of all ages simply don’t pay attention beyond their own lives. Many don’t even pay attention to the details of their own lives! It’s hard to be successful and impact others if you’re not paying attention to anything but yourself. Connor paid attention to the problems facing the country when the majority of teens simply didn’t care. And, it allowed him to find a solution he believed in.
Not only did Connor Brantley pay attention, but he also believed that he could make a difference in an area where many people don’t believe real change is possible. Being pessimistic and negative are two ways to ensure that you’ll never really be happy and bring about change. Those who are hopeful and optimistic are the ones who typically find success, popularity, and make a difference.
Connor Brantley is a great example of a teen who follows his convictions, is aware of the problems, and makes a difference. And, he’s found a little bit of fame from it too. As with our other featured teens, he’s a great example to follow.
