For the past few Fridays, we’ve spotlighted teens with the entrepreneurial spirit. They found a need and filled it through a business endeavor. However, there are a lot of other needs that aren’t about selling things, but helping others. Today we’re looking at The Drop Your Dress Foundation, which is dedicated to helping empower teens with debilitating and terminal illnesses by giving them a prom style party.
The non-profit was founded by Kendall Daugherty and Jordan Mutnansky. The two girls went on a church trip and had a realization: they needed to do something to make a differnece. Not in the future as adults, but right at that moment as teenagers. They immediately texted their church’s youth minister and arranged a meeting with him.
At that meeting they further articulated their vision: helping sick youth living a very abnormal life with illnesses actually have a normal prom type of experience. They drew up a business plan, figured out their needs, and started promoting it. The board of directors is even comprised of teenagers. Now, they are providing dresses, suits, and, above all, meaningful experiences to sick teens.
Kendall and Jordan are obviously very unique! Starting a non-profit isn’t the easiest task, let alone running is successfully. However, they have the character traits to pull it off! You can learn from their example to become more popular and successful too.
The girls admitted they basically had the idea at the exact same time. And, they worked as a team on their goal. If you have a talent, a dream, or a goal, if it’s big, you’ll never be able to do it yourself. Find a good partner (or several partners) to help you in your quest. If anything they can be emotional support when things get stressful.
Utilize Your Values
Both Kendall and Jordan are Christians and used their faith as a motivator to make a difference. In addition, they used their church as a headquarters for their new operation. They didn’t shy away from their religious values, but instead embraced them and used them to be successful in their plans. Whatever you believe, stick with it and use it to reach your dreams!
