Today is July 4th, also known as Independence Day in the United States. It’s not just a day when adults don’t have to work and families have get togethers with a lot of grilled food and fireworks. It’s originally the day to celebrate the independence of the United States from England.
Today is a good day to talk about independence for teens. How independent are you (or your child if you’re a parent)? It’s not easy being a teen and dealing with peer pressure. It’s not just kids being asked to do drugs. There is a lot of pressure to conform and be like everyone else.
However, the truly popular people and those who find success later in life aren’t the ones conforming. They’re the ones leading. Every new trend in music, fashion, movies, sports, etc. required someone to break out of the mold and do something unique. However, it doesn’t happen much.
Following others is easy. It requires no risk. Being independent and doing your own thing…that requires boldness and risk. But, the rewards can be great. Instead of following trends, you’re creating them. And, others follow you. You’re the celebrity. You’re popular.
So, this independence day, don’t just sit around enjoying the food and fireworks. Think about what it really means to be independent and try to achieve it. You can start by being your best self and standing up for what you believe in.
