It is fun to pick out a Halloween costume. We have provided some good tips to do that, part one and part two. But, did you know that your Halloween costume can also be a way to meet new people (friends and dates) if you know how to do it?
Yes! Anything you do that gets you positive attention will make people talk to you. Have you ever been to a great concert by a local band? What happens afterwards? People try to find the band to talk to them. If you have a cool and funny Halloween costume that makes people laugh or smile, they will likely say something to you about it.
Recently I was at a giant Halloween street party in Columbus, Ohio. They block off some of the downtown for it. Everyone is dressed up. Because I had a really funny and unique costume (a blow-up fat guy costume), nearly everybody talked to me about it. That’s right, random people approached me and started up a conversation! Many people would kill to have this type of opportunity. So here is how to use that Halloween costume to meet new people.
Pick A Funny and Unique Costume
Anybody can go to Wal-Mart and buy a wig or some funny teeth. There is nothing wrong with that. You will see lots of scary masks, princess outfits, and Captain Americas at your Halloween events this year. However, you won’t stand out.
When shopping, pick something that will get you positive attention. If it makes people laugh, even better. Psychology tells us that people pay attention to things that are impressive or different. If you can choose an outfit that is both, people will approach you and talk to you. However, do not choose an outfit that is overly scary or creepy. Very few people are going to talk to you if you are hidden behind a scary mask or look totally unapproachable. Yeah, people know it is fake, but a scary costume does basically say “don’t approach me” doesn’t it?
Wear It Like You Own It
At a Halloween event in college, a guy was dressed in a similar costume. I approached him and said something about it. He reacted like a shy little puppy. I was taken aback. How could a guy in such a cool costume be so backward?
You just can’t choose a cool costume, wear it, and expect to get approached. You have to own the costume. You have to be confident and comfortable with the attention you are getting. It is okay to be a little cocky and confident, because you know you have a great costume, and are entertaining everyone you meet. By wearing a cool costume, you are an entertainer. If you want to be successful at it, you must act like a real entertainer and have confidence. If you have trouble mustering up confidence, just pretend like you really are a successful entertainer (like an actor or musician). All the people that are complimenting you and talking to you should convince you to be confident!
Be Ready With Follow-Up Conversation
If you have chosen the right costume, and worn it properly (confidently!), people will talk to you. They will make comments to you, usually related to your costume. For example, if you dressed like a bottle of hot sauce, they may say they like another brand better. You need to have good follow-up conversation, or else all the comments are wasted. Remember, this is your chance for a performance. If you do it right, you will win some friends and maybe even get some dates.
Plan some of your general follow-up ideas before you dress up. Choose lines that relate to your costume. If you are dressed as bottle of hot sauce, have some comments related to that (such as “yes, I am hot”). Have some lines handy for people that smile or make comments. When people stare and smile, you will want to have something catchy to say. Don’t memorize cheesy lines. Just come up with some basic line ideas, and go from there. If you want to get a date, then make your lines a little more flirty. Just remember to keep your lines appropriate to the event. Some that would be acceptable at an after-school party won’t be acceptable at school. The same goes for costumes!
