Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase “survival of the fittest” in science class. It refers to the fact that, in nature, only the strongest within a species (and among different species) survive. If you are a high school student, then you’re likely very familiar with survival of the fittest. Except, in this case, you’re trying to survive and thrive in the competitive environment of a modern high school!
The key to success in a high school is actually the same as survival in nature: flexibility. That’s right; if you want to be a popular teen, then you’ll have to adapt. If you can’t, you won’t be extinct, but your social life might be.
Adapting yourself doesn’t mean changing your core values or being a faker. Instead, it means you find ways to fit in, get dates, make new friends, and generally be popular while still being yourself. Below are a few tips to adapt to your social situations and become more popular, without compromising your core values.
Even if you don’t fully agree with someone or think they’re “in your crowd,” get to know them anyway. For example, just because a guy is into music and you’re into sports, doesn’t mean you can’t be his friend. You can build friendship (and romance) on issues outside of your hobbies.
Keep An Open Mind
This is related to the first piece of advice. Be open-minded about ideas, activities, and groups of people. Be willing to try new things. Join a variety of different clubs, sports, and participate in a variety of activities. Be the guy (or girl) who can be the best anywhere. This will expand your circle of friends and make you look very good. Other people love guys and girls who are talented in many ways!
Take It Easy
Just relax a little bit. Take a more laid back approach to life. Don’t sweat the small stuff. This means you can be a little less rigid about most things. It will probably be evident to others and they will want to be around you more (and not think you’re a snob).
Use Your Smarts
Dinosaurs were big and powerful; but they’re gone. Humans, on the other hand, are pretty smart and have survived (so far). When in social situations, be smart. Always think on your feet and find ways to let your talents and best traits shine through. For example, if the situation is tense, throw in some humor. If someone appears upset, be the first to listen. If someone needs help, lend a hand. Be smart and aware and take advantage of every chance you get to be liked and popular.
So, go out there and adapt! And, always be thinking of new creative and clever ways to be popular.
