Winter is coming and that means, even for fit and healthy teens, the possibility of weight gain. Unless they play an indoor sport, winter is the perfect time to put on the pounds. In most regions it’s colder, the weather is highly unpredictable, and the temptation is greatest to sit down on the couch and stare at a screen (oh and snack too).
But, you don’t have to gain weight during the winter. It’s actually not that hard to stay fit and healthy (or get in shape) during the winter months. If you hate the outdoor heat, you may actually have more success. Here are three ways to avoid weight gain over the winter months.
Take Advantage of Winter
Winter is actually a pretty cool time to workout. There are many sports and activities that you simply can’t do in the summer or take on a different twist in the winter. Some obvious examples are skiing (cross country and downhill), sledding, and snowboarding. One not so obvious example is snow golf (yes people play it).
Find a way to be fit and active in uniquely winter ways and you’ll keep the weight off and actually have some fun. Even things like snowball fights can be calorie burning activities. Resist the urge to sit inside all day and miss the fun.
Be Creative Indoors
A lot of indoor exercising can be very boring. For example, I love running outside, but a treadmill bores me to tears! Most people would probably agree with me. However, if you won’t or can’t go outside in the winter, then try to be creative with your indoor workouts. One of the best ways is to mix things up a little. Do a few DVDs (see our Insanity the Asylum Volume 2 review), mix up your work out machines, or join a gym (see our tips to choose a gym).
Be Ready For Summer
If you truly love summer and want to show off your beach body, then you’ll have to earn that body…when? During the winter! Anytime you find yourself avoiding workouts or sitting on your butt snacking, remember the beach body you want for the summer months. It may even help to put up a visual reminder in your room. When you look at it, you’ll remember how you’d rather work hard and eat right over the winter to make your summer body better than ever!
During the summer, I’ve never once looked back and wished I had spent more time sitting around during the winter. If anything, I wished I’d done more working out! Keep this in mind when you feel like lazing around.
So, don’t let the coming winter be an excuse for weight gain. If you’re overweight, then use that time to get in shape. Let your summer body be awesome!
