The last three years, I haven’t looked forward to Christmas as much. It is not that I am becoming heartless or anti-Christmas. In fact, I still love Christmas – a lot. Right now, I am listening to Christmas music on the way to work, and taking nightly trips to look at lights. I do love the season.
So, why don’t I look forward to it as much? It is just that the excitement and hope I feel at Christmas, I feel all the time. Sure, I have bad days like everybody else, but when you have the traits that make you popular, waking up every day is a joy.
February 15th? You can ask that girl out that day! April 10th? That is the day you launch your new business. July 27th? You are going to go out and meet five new people. September 2nd? You’re going to start school looking great, with a new mental attitude. Do you see what I mean? Every single day of the year can be full of hope and fun if you have the right approach to life.
This is because there are different ways you can approach a day. Present Moment, Wonderful Moment by Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh includes some gathas, or short prayers/intentions.
One example that I think explains what a popular person feels each morning is this:
Waking up this morning, I smile.
Twenty four brand new hours are before me.
I vow to live fully in each moment
and to look at all beings with eyes of compassion
When you are excellent, outgoing, fun, balanced, and detached, the world (including school) becomes a place of possibilities, rather than a dreaded and limiting place. Your first thought in the morning (after the ringing of the alarm dies down!) is hope and joy, because your life is changing, for the better!
This website, and our forthcoming book (stay tuned!) provide you the tools to be popular and take advantage of the benefits of popularity. When you have friends and opportunities, every day is like Christmas!
