A few months ago I ordered coffee and started talking to two employees. The subject ended up on books and one employee admitted to hating books and never reading. The other employee told her friend, “maybe that’s why you’re so dumb.” Although I certainly don’t recommend talking to other people that way, the young woman who read regularly hit upon an important point: reading has incredible benefits in life, including greater knowledge.
As a teen, you might be soured on reading. Perhaps you’ve been forced to read a lot and being forced to do anything makes you resistant. Fair enough. However, reading is very valuable. Let me explain why you should read books. And, for the types who like to jump to the end, one of those reasons is helping you get more dates.
It Keeps You Sharp
Memory loss and mental decline are common into old age. You might have a grandparent who suffers from this or perhaps even Alzheimer’s disease. A study of elderly people showed that older individuals who read regularly throughout life had healthier brains and memory function at older ages. So, some reading now could ensure that your brain works when you’re older. Even if you’re not thinking about life in your 80’s, your future self will thank you.
It Lowers Stress
When we read, we are transported into another world. We can become anything we want to be and escape into a new reality. Even with non-fiction books, if they’re interesting, we can feel good about learning and processing new information.
One study showed that even just five minutes of reading was able to reduce stress by up to 68%. If you have a rough day at school, work, or home, reading is a great way to become more relaxed and de-stressed.
You Become A Better Writer
One of the top skills employers want in their employees is an ability to write and communicate. Lots of teens know it’s very difficult to communicate, whether it’s with a teacher, friend, or your crush. However, the style and skill of the writer has been shown to rub off on the person reading the book. Those who read typically become better writers and communicators. But, that’s not the only way reading could help you be more popular and get the attention of the person you like.
It Makes You More Attractive
Another study found that intelligent men, or even men perceived as intelligent (the fakers) were judged more attractive. So, guys, while appearance matters too, the ladies like guys who are intelligent, as well. And, what way can you become more intelligent and/or show others than you know something? Yes, by reading, especially non-fiction books.
So, while there are many reasons why you should read books, these are some major ones. Quit making excuses and pick up a good book!
